Exposure to transit migration: Public attitudes and entrepreneurship

Does exposure to mass migration affect the attitudes and economic behavior of natives in transit countries? In order answer this question, we use a unique locality-level panel from 2010 2016 rounds Life Transition Survey data on main land routes taken by migrants 18 European countries during refugee crisis 2015. To capture exogenous variation natives’ migration, construct an instrument that is based each locality’s distance optimal minimize traveling time between refugees’ origins destinations. We find entrepreneurial activity native population falls considerably localities are more exposed compared those located farther away. explore potential mechanisms results lower confidence government, higher perceived political instability, less willingness take risks. also document increase anti-migrant sentiment while towards other minorities remain unchanged.
